68-Acre Waterfront Estate
Westover, Maryland

Rarely available gracious, historic brick mansion with modern conveniences. Once the home of the president of the DuPont Company, the 68-acre secluded waterfront estate includes two other separate homes for estate manager or guests and numerous barns, stable, and outbuildings, magnolia and boxwood gardens, in-ground pool and private sandy beach. Spectacular views over the Manokin River and setting sun from the welcoming porches.

Fine Federal and Georgian style woodwork embellish the 12-foot high ceiling rooms. Basement has walk-in vault for valuables, pool table room and wine cellar. Eight rooms have wood-burning fireplaces. Offered fully furnished. The grand entrance hallway to the home introduces immense living and dining rooms showcasing fine period style mantel pieces, marble hearths, cornices, wainscoting, chair rails and recessed china and book cases. The paneling in living room and dining room is based on that in the Metropolitan Museum of Art American Wing. The dining room can seat 20 guests, but is also comfortable for a family meal. The grand Palladian window on the second floor leads to impressive bedchambers connected to the double screened porches with jib doors extending the entire width of the water-facing rear elevation. The mansion contains some original Federal molding and glass panes. Within the building's side wings are the kitchen, kitchen sunroom, butler's pantry, and additional bedrooms and baths.

Clifton is on the National Register of Historic Places, within the Manokin Historic District. It is located on the site of the 1666 land grant of one Somerset County's earliest settlers, Randall Revell. The original center section built around 1800 is Federal and Georgian style of Flemish Bond brick construction. The door at the front entrance, topped by a grand fanlight opens to a transverse hall and the original Federal molding on the stairs. In the 1940's the existing structure of Clifton was exquisitely restored and a service wing on the East and pool wing on the West were added. Double porches with a Southern waterfront exposure create a relaxing in the peaceful setting. With its manicured grounds, pasture land, private beach and wooded acreage, this is truly a gem of unparalleled beauty!
