Two Story all red brick building built in 1905 to 1907 here in Carrizozo New Mexico.  Doctor Melvin G Paden, a doctor and surgeon arrived from the East Coast. The first floor was his apothecary during small pox, births, deaths and rail road tragedies. The second floor was Doc Paden's surgery.

What was "knob and tube" wiring is now completely up to electrical code. New plumbing and HVAC Systems were installed by us in 2024.

Downstairs has wood floors throughout, replica tin ceilings in the apothecary, transom windows over doors and original hardware doorknobs and butterfly hinges. Large storefront windows, 14 foot ceilings, original pharmaceutical cabinets line the walls, 1880's standing prescription desk, solid marble bar and its original mirror with stained glass wings remain. Continuing downstairs through the arch is a mezzanine with staircase, two 1890s chandeliers and original wood shelves from floor to ceiling. Although new, the toilet and sink keep the Edwardian style while the large mop sink remains the original. More yet, a bright corner room is currently used as an office. The pantry with original shelves stands before the new country kitchen with Blodgett convection oven.

Before reaching the second floor, half way up the solid stairway is a storage alcove. Up top, wood floors extend into the loft under exposed rafters, 25 feet long across. 28 new windows provide views over the town and onto the surrounding mountains. A dressing room we used for actors, the old surgery room currently used for costumes and the beautiful bathroom with the original cast iron porcelain apron-tub and original sink remain.

Not done yet, a part of the same property is a free standing 650-foot cottage, completely renovated. Once Doc Paden's 1905 office, it's now a casita with kitchen, bathroom and laundry facility. A large yard in the back is a part of the property's 3 lots, all secured by a compound wall.

The two buildings stand proudly on Highway 54. The highway that travels from Texas to Illinois (as clocked by the DOT), is traversed by 4,000 motor vehicles a day.

Carrizozo NM has about 1,000 residents, most who have settled from other parts of the USA. Four seasons with mostly very blue skies, “ZoZo” is at 5,429 feet above sea level. Successful artists, county workers, families and retirees make this town a friendly but quiet environment. Yes, we hear the train a-comin' but hear no commercial flights overhead. A movie studio is slated to open in April 2024 bringing more attention to our small oasis.

Doc Paden's stands ready for a new commercial venture. Want more information?
